Zotero is one of the best citation managers available. For writers, academic researchers and others, it has proven to be a pivotal tool for quickly managing and adding references when writing essays, research manuscripts and books. Zotero also allows for collaboration among team members, making it easy to share references and work on projects together. Users can create groups within Zotero and invite others to join, allowing for seamless collaboration on research projects. Finally, Zotero also offers syncing capabilities, allowing users to access their reference library from any device with an internet connection.

Zotero offers plugins for popular word processors such as Microsoft Word and Google Docs, making it easy to insert citations and create bibliographies. Users can also customize the storage location for their reference library and adjust various settings to optimize their workflow. Additionally, Zotero offers a variety of themes to customize the appearance of the application.

One of the great features of Zotero is that it’s an open source software, which enables developers to build a ton of plugins to use. Some of the most useful extensions include:

  • Zotero Connector
  • Zotero Tag
  • Zotfile
  • BetterBibtex
  • Citation Count
  • Night Theme
  • Notero / Obsidian Connector
  • Better Notes
  • Office/LibreOffice/GDrive Connector
  • Zotero SciHub

Zotero Connector

Zotero connector is the primary first party extension used for quickly, adding citations, bookmarks and academic articles from a browser to the local Zotero library. Furthermore, depending on the type of browser you use from Google Chrome to Safari a different Zotero, personalized connector is available for each of them. Ideally, this should be the first extension installed every time Zotero is installed on your local PC.

Zotero Tag

Library organization can often get tricky once the list of number of items inside Zotero start getting longer. Tagging citations is a good way to organize them for later references. The Zotero-tag extension makes it easier and simpler to add tags, and to quickly add custom tags, such as interesting to read, memorize, etc. Tags can be configured to be added using custom shortcuts, and even exported to a CSV file.

Zotfile

One of the big limitations of Zotero is the fact that it’s storage options are fairly limited when it comes to the free tier of the service. The free tier of the software comes with less than 500 MB of storage. Zotfile makes it easier to store PDFs and other documents associated with each item inside zotero separately on your local disk. The files can also be synced with a service like Google Drive or dropbox, thereby giving it a multi-device support and potentially a lot more storage than is available in the free tier.

Better Bibtex

Better BibTeX (BBT) is an extension for Zotero that makes it easier to manage bibliographic data, especially for people authoring documents using text-based toolchains. At its core, BBT behaves like any Zotero import/export module; anywhere you can export or import bibliography items in Zotero, you’ll find Better X listed among the choices.

Note: One of the big problems with this plug-in is the that it slightly hinders the start of time off is Zotero however it more than makes up for that with the plethora of functionality that it offers.

Citation Count

The add-on can auto-fetch citation counts for journal articles using various APIs, including CrossRef, and Semantic Scholar. Citation count as a simple plug-in that quickly shows of the number of citations a given reference has been cited for using various online databases. This is helpful to figure out how much of an impact a given piece of literature might’ve had.

Night Theme

Primarily for the dark mode users, the night team helps convert the entire software into a darker shade.

Notero

For people who use Zotero in combination with other note taking software, like Notion or Obsidian, these plug-ins help sync various items in your Zotero database to the note taking software. Notero uses the Notion API thereby helping you to better keep track off all the literature while doing something like a literature review. Notero also syncs the items any time they are changed or modified, including any changes to the item fields or tags etc.

Better Notes

Apparently optional plug-in this helps in making the app act as a lightweight note editor where you can import annotations, make workflows, and even like write an entire piece of literature inside Zotero, if need be fairly limited in functionality, but works great when jotting down quick notes or quickly linking different annotations made and notes from different pieces of literature inside Zotero .

Office Connector

Fairly self-explanatory, this plug-in helps add references from your citation database into the word document, or a Google document when writing down a manuscript.

Zotero SciHub

Sometimes you just need to use SciHub.

Zotero is a highly versatile and efficient citation manager that has proven to be an invaluable tool for writers, researchers, and others who need to organize and manage references. Its user-friendly interface and various features make it easy to use, customize, and collaborate with others. Furthermore, the availability of numerous plugins and extensions adds to the overall usefulness of Zotero. With its open-source platform, Zotero is constantly evolving and improving, making it a reliable and popular choice for managing citations and references. Whether you are a student, academic, or professional writer, Zotero can help streamline your workflow and save you time and effort.
